SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T MAKE ENDS MEET
During the '90's, not everyone benefited from the burgeoning U.S. economy. In fact, the number of bankruptcies filed increased as the decade progressed. Some of the reasons are:
- Single moms struggled financially without the benefit of a second income and sometimes without the benefit of child support
- Salaries increased in some industries like technology and banking, but lagged behind in other industries, and many experienced mass layoffs
- Millions of people lacked health insurance. One serious medical problem or disability can cause a family to lose everything.
When people are overwhelmed financially, they pay the creditor that makes the most noise, such as the credit card company because they hound you or the company that made the car loan because it threatens to repossess the vehicle or the utility company that threatens to terminate electric or phone service.
People often make the mistake of paying these loans because they know it takes longer to foreclose on the house than to repossess the car. But the interest payments, taxes and legal fees are adding up and up, and eventually there is just no way to catch up. The Sheriff is at your door.
